This Portland family favorite benefits the youth programming of Impact NW, especially the Kids on the Block Awareness Program.

Yoshida's Sand in the City benefits Impact Northwest, a local Portland nonprofit that aims to help people achieve and maintain self sufficiency and alleviate the effects of poverty in our community.

On Saturday, April 25th, Wallace Park came alive with music, food, and family-friendly fun. People ccould learn about environmental organizations, natural healing practices, and local sustainable businesses. The music of Alpaca, Taproot, Off the Grid, Sweet Home String Band, Fruition String Band, Sara Tone, and Hijinks entertained people for the day. The Earth Day event was coordinated by the City Repair Project, and sponsored by Food Front Cooperative Grocery, Lewis & Clark College, the National College of Natural Medicine, KBOO Community Radio, the ReDirect Guide, and Legacy Health Systems.

A New Way Forward is made up of national protests that took place all over the country in major cities on April 11, 2009. These are photos from the protest that took place in Portland.

"It's not enough to patch up the current system. We need to restrict the ways that bankers can lobby and serve in the government. We need to prohibit compensation plans that encourages huge short-term risk. We have to break up any bank that's "too big to fail" so that we can have a functional free market.

Western Oregon Plan Revisions (WOPR) Protest

These photos were taken at a rally on November 14th at the Oregon State Capitol. Oregonians in attendence were asking Governor Kulongoski to stop the implementation of the Western Oregon Plan Revisions (WOPR), which would allow the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to increase logging of Oregon lands by 463%. Last week, Jasmine, a student from an Oregon University, sat in a tree on the State Capitol Campus to raise awareness of the issue. To mark the day of the rally, Jasmine descended from the tree.

For those that don't know me, penguins are my favorite bird. While on a photo shoot at the Portland Zoo this last week, I was taken with this little guy, so I decided to devote some time to photographing him. Needless to say, he was very patient in letting me do my camera work.

Tragically, the penguin population around the world is currently in steep decline. More than one-fifth of penguin species are in danger of becoming extinct. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the global penguin population has been to half. And, of the 19 species, four are facing certain extinction.

Although Zoos in general may have their place in education and possibly protecting limited species from going extinct, it made my heart very sad to see this penguin and his many friends in captivity. Until humans work to curb their impact on the environment, Penguins like this are in danger of having their existence snuffed out.

According to the WWF, penguins face a number of threats, including destruction of nesting habitats, competition with fishermen for fish and shrimp, and introduced predators such as rats, dogs and foxes which eat penguin eggs and young. The greatest potential threat to penguins in global warming, as they are extremely sensitive to climate change. For more information on what you can do, please visit WWF's Penguin Page

I was going through my photo files and found this. I took this picture in August 2005 at a POW WOW put on by the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board brought a traditional Native American POW WOW to Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland to educate the public on the Native American's health status in the US. The Event included Native American Drummers and performances by dancers of all ages.

The Oil Enforcement Agency (OEA) was operating a check point outside today's Portland City Council meeting. The OEA attempted to ticket supporters of the Columbia River Crossing (CRC) for their advocacy of oil abuse. Present was also a cult of pro-bridge oil-worshippers, complete with a 12 foot tall mock oil derrick.

I am a father, a husband, a communications director for an immigrant rights organization, a communications consultant and an independent photojournalist from the pacific northwest and this photo blog is dedicated to a collection of my photography from over the last 10 years. Most of the photography is of a political nature, though there may be scenes of everyday human interaction and non-human oriented photos thrown in. Some photos will be added in not any specific order, however will be catagorized by subject. As the saying "a picture speaks 1000 words" goes, it is my hope this photo collection will give the viewer a sense of the world I see through my view finder.
